Black Mountains Trail Running Challenge Set at the home of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme, we are in the perfect place for trail running and our challenge will not let you down. Offering distances from 14K to the 50K Ultra Marathon there is a distance for everyone. Drafts rotate regularly and change often. As you approach 1/3 of a mile from the peak, there are nice clusters of Teddy Bear Cholla… but be careful: these cacti are painful to brush by and often have little clusters that have fallen off the mother plant scattered about. Great views from the top. Very, very buggy. Trail BLM404 (Black Mountain) is an easy hike most of the way until the last ½ mile when you might have to engage in some scrambling (class 2). I also didn't bring a wide brim hat and by now the sun was beating down on my head and I was cooking. Repeat bring a big net. This 65-foot tower was built in 1995 and is only the most recent lookout on Black Butte. In summer, nobody knows how much water you would need.
